MS in Artificial Intelligence Engineering
McKelvey’s Master's in Artificial Intelligence Engineering program delivers elite technical training, connects students with world-class researchers and cultivates an environment built for success. Through hands-on projects, focused coursework and opportunities to work across disciplines at one of the world’s leading research institutions, the program will help you understand not only how to build powerful AI systems, but also how to apply them thoughtfully to solve complex, real-world problems, while drawing from a range of application domains.
Develop the expertise to engineer AI systems
You will develop expertise in the computational techniques and systems involved in engineering systems that use AI, including how AI systems and agents depend on the data used to train them, and how to design optimal solutions that best leverage available computational resources across a range of platforms and types of applications.
At graduation, you will be prepared to design, evaluate and deploy AI technologies in a wide range of industries, pursue leadership roles in an evolving field or continue into advanced research.
McKelvey drives AI research forward
As a master’s student in the Artificial Intelligence Engineering program, you can expect to work with world-renowned faculty in AI, computer science and computer engineering. You’ll also have the flexibility to work with other faculty within and outside of McKelvey, including faculty at WashU Medicine, one of the nation’s top medical schools.
You will learn from faculty who are advancing artificial intelligence across areas such as machine learning, autonomous systems, data science, security, imaging, public health and human health. Consider these recent research initiatives:

Chenyang Lu and his team are developing AI models using wearable device data and electronic health records to predict health outcomes, advancing both precision medicine and public health.

Nathan Jacobs and his team have pioneered techniques that train AI models on real-world reference images to identify visual artifacts, inconsistent lighting and other anomalies in AI-generated media, leading to robust, generalized detectors for deepfakes and manipulated images.

Jiaxin Huang, recently recognized with a National Science Foundation CAREER Award, is working on adaptive knowledge synthesis to help large language models integrate information from multiple external sources to generate a solution or conclusion.

Yevgeniy Vorobeychik and Ning Zhang are investigating how AI models respond when under attack, such as when bad actors spoof sensor input in self-driving cars. Their research is leading to the development of reliable and resilient defenses against such attacks.
McKelvey's industry connections run deep
Employers increasingly look for new graduates who demonstrate high-value skills in orchestrating AI – being able to architect complex workflows, to evaluate model outputs and to integrate AI into domain-specific systems. These are core areas of training in McKelvey’s AI Engineering program.
McKelvey CSE graduates are hired by tech firms and corporations such as Boeing, Amazon, Mastercard and Meta.
